Dear Sir,

Will you permit me to elucidate the following circumstances? For nearly 13 years I served the Government in various capacities, and until July 1904, I held the position of Registrar of the Supreme Court in the Judicial office at Hong Kong. My services will be found satisfactory after I had applied for leave consequent upon my health breaking down due to the much overwork. My medical adviser pronounced me physically unfit and stated that I required rest.

The then Chief Justice, Mr. Goodman, sent for me while I was in Chambers and there, in the presence of several legal practitioners, began to find fault with me in matters of procedure which he did not understand and in which I was perfectly right. Intolerantly, he charged me with being about "...", and for addressing one of my standing and position in the manner that he did.

I sought the assistance of the Puisne Judge (Mr. A. G. V. Barr) whose advice I had sought (and it was duly found late in the afternoon in his Chamber), and who was then in a most excitable condition having just returned from the Bench where...
